Futaba 9C Setup using SkyTach

Before activating the TJ, set up your heli with the pitch and throttle curves you would use under normal circumstances. This will ensure that should the sensor fail and the TJ reverts to transmitter throttle curves that the heli still behaves normally until a landing can be accomplished. Also ensure that this setup allows the heli to hover at your desired stick position (1/2 or ¾ as preferred) for each flight mode. The engine should be run-in and correct mixtures set.

Plug in connections per instructions.

Make note of throttle curve values for Norm mode. (Courtesy of Bill K.)

Set normal throttle curve to 0,25,50,75,100

Set throttle endpoints as close to 100/100 as possible.

Temporarily set up throttle end-points so it moves to full closed and full open position without using throttle cut option and throttle sub trim at lowest position..

Enable GOV function and select sw.(A) and set UP to 0% and Down to 100%

Set ch.7 endpoints to 90/90

Now go into calibration procedure.

With throttle stick low, turn on RX and immediately toggle sw(A) rapidly twice: down-up-down-up.

Green LED will flash rapidly.

Move throttle stick to high and LED will turn yellow and then move throttle stick to low(LED goes back to green).

Toggle switch(A) once and LED goes out. Calibration done J

After calibrating, set switch option for governor to either (C) or (E) for three position control.

Return throttle cut option to be active again and re-enter values for Norm flight mode on throttle curve.

Switch (C) and (E) are 3 position switches: UP, Center, Down

A value of 50% on any of these 3 positions disables TJ . Verify this by moving throttle to high and LED should not come on.

We are now going to determine values to enter for specific headspeeds .

RevMax Setup

For this example we are using a ¾ stick hover, which puts zero degrees pitch at ½ stick and have selected switch E on GOV screen for flight mode control.

It is best to have a helper on this, but it can be done alone. Just be very careful and do not attempt it alone if it’s windy or it just sounds crazy to you.

Set GOV screen to 50% for normal mode (UP). This disables TJ for next actions.

Go to norm flight mode throttle curve screen and select mid-point of throttle curve.

Using SkyTach, set tach display to read slightly higher than the highest headspeed you want the TJ to limit. (1850 for this example

Stand away from heli and spool up to 0 degree pitch setting. (1/2 stick)

Slowly increase mid-point throttle percentage until Tach and headspeed match. (blades will appear to have stopped when you reach 1850 rpm)

Bring throttle back to low stick.

Now adjust Tach display to read the actual headspeed you want TJ to limit.(1800)

On governor screen adjust UP switch position (Normal Mode if switch E) value to 60% to enable TJ

Now spool heli up again to zero degrees, the headspeed should be significantly lowered now because TJ is being enabled.(setting is above 50%)

Slowly increase the UP switch position value from 60% until blades appear stopped (viewing through SkyTach) and that will be the value required for a 1800 rpm limit. You can now enter that value into either CENTER or DOWN for the highest headspeed setting(Normally flight mode 2 or DOWN).

Now set SkyTach for second speed (lower) and repeat above steps but just slowly decrease the value you have already for the UP switch position.

After this is done, re-enter starting value for Norm throttle curve mid-point and you are done.

You can do above steps for a two position switch also and just leave one position at 50% for disable and enter your found value from above method for other switch position.

Setup for TJPro

Use the above method with the SkyTach with the exact head speed you want selected versus a slightly higher head speed like above for the RevMax.

Instead of increasing the midpoint of your throttle curve you will re-enter your normal flight mode curve values.

Select the UP switch position under the GOVENOR Menu and enter 50%.

(Normal Mode showing on screen for flight condition with sw(E) selected)

Spool heli up to 0 degrees pitch throttle position.

Slowly increase the UP value from the 50% (TJ disabled) setting while in normal mode. You will notice a rapid head speed decrease as soon as a value over 53% is reached (this is TJ engaging).

While someone is viewing through tach, increase UP value until head speed you set Tach at is reached. This is your high head speed so make note of that value.

Reduce tach display to second head speed desired and then decrease UP value on GOV screen to attain the next head speed.

Now you have your values for the head speed’s you want to maintain. Enter them in to the corresponding flight condition switch position and go fly.

The target rotor speed can be calculated using the EPA Calculator
